LUX / EROS Presents:
Second Self
curated by Joslin Van Arsdale
“The computer is a new mirror, the first psychological machine”
(Sherry Turkle, Second Self, 1984)
Computers have become a mirror and vehicle to our fantasies, where multiple identities and
realities exist via text, email, IM and social media. Second Self, features six artists from across
the globe, whose work is inspired by the many ways in which we traverse identity online. Artists
Mathieu Grac, Erin M. Riley, Brendan George Ko, Brendan Donnelly, Tamsen Wojtanowski and
Michael Zachary explore the dualism created between our physical selves and its internet
representation, creating post-modern portraits within parallel worlds that emerge as a simulated,
enhanced, fragmented and hybrid versions of oneself.
The exhibition will open on Saturday, September 8, 2012 from 6 to 9pm. It is free and will be
open for viewing every Saturday, 11-5p. and by appointment through October 1, 2012.
Joslin Van Arsdale is a curator and photography consultant based in Los Angeles.
Brendan George Ko
I remember as a kid I used to cover my face with my hands, and peek at the world through my fingers. I could see the world,
but the world couldn’t see me. Nowadays I find myself assimilating with the hybrid, a creature I share a betwixt nature with,
for we are both between two worlds, having multiple origins, and demand our own realm, such as a gothic castle, a tomb, or
limbo to serve as a haven.
Brendan Donnelly
Artist/Designer Brendan Donnelly Draws his inspiration from some pretty unlikely places: the grimy surf tourist culture of
Venice Beach, the Internet, Horror movies, California skate and surf culture, and his latest obsession, the online 3D virtual
world, Second Life.
Erin M. Riley
Is a tapestry weaver that spends hours on a floor loom with wool yarn that I hand dye, manipulate or deconstruct depicting
young women in states of undress or exposure, personal objects and various landscapes relating to destruction and death.
I am drawn to images that represent sexuality as the private and intimate event that it sometimes can be but also finding the
images that are the remnants of courtship, early text message/IM/email flirtations turned into the litter of the internet or
Facebook. I am using my own images that I have sent to lovers, images that are very similar to those I have sent and images
depicting the moments that I can in many instances relate to as a sexual being,.
Michael Zachary
.Pictures for Artificial Intelligence
When I made these pictures I was trying to turn myself into a human digital camera. I was as interested in asking the question
“how can digital tools help us see the world more clearly?” as I was in asking the question “how can painting help us see the
world more clearly?” The images are composed of hand drawn modular vectors in CMYK additive color, the same building
blocks as digital images. The only difference is the substitution of lines for pixels.

Boyz and Girlz du Net Series
Self-portraits on dating sites hold a real fascination for me and I have been gathering an increasing number of them for a few
years. Each individual decides to present themselves in a similar manner to the others. Some of these poses seem to be
typical of a given genre but when one looks closer at the way the pictures are organized, one will discover that there is no
seduction here but a reproduction of seduction codes. These pictures are pure signs, and this is what makes them fascinating.
The fact that makes you uneasy is not due to their content but because they appear gratuitous and also because they are so
accessible. This series presents a new way of looking at the every day life of teenagers, extended to the intimate settings of
their bedrooms. The images are a facade, where teens are fully absorbed in a new rite of passage
Tamsen Wojtanowski
In my personal research I am interested in the accessibility and malleability of the photographic medium. I believe that
photography must stay open to a wide range of approaches and viewpoints, both photo-centric and not. In my studio I work
with a number of different materials and processes to create autobiographical images, with an interest in our natural human
disposition of story-telling.
